Cross Morocco from north to south: the Middle Atlas, a night in the Sahara, the gorges and the kasbahs, ending in Marrakech.
The perfect route if you arrive in Fes and fly home from Marrakech. Every day brings a new landscape: cedar forests, dunes, red canyons and earthen kasbahs.
Our most requested route for travellers arriving in Fes and leaving from Marrakech. It crosses the country without ever repeating a road and includes a full day in the Sahara.
You sleep one night in a riad by the dunes, one in the desert camp and one in the Dades valley, so every evening has a different atmosphere.

Day by day
Day1
Fes – Ifrane – Merzouga
The Middle Atlas, Midelt and the Ziz valley to the dunes. Night in a riad in Merzouga.
Leaving Fes, you climb into the Middle Atlas to Ifrane, a surprising town with alpine roofs, and the cedar forest of Azrou, where Barbary macaques live in the wild. After lunch in Midelt, at the foot of the snowy Ayachi, the road follows the Ziz gorges and its endless palm groves past Errachidia and Erfoud to Merzouga, at the edge of the dunes.
Day2
Merzouga: the desert
4x4 tour, Khamlia and the nomads. Camel ride at sunset and night in the camp.
Merzouga is the gateway to Erg Chebbi, a sea of orange dunes up to 150 metres high. By 4x4 you visit a nomad family for tea, the village of Khamlia, where Gnawa musicians of sub-Saharan origin play their hypnotic music, the seasonal lake and the black stone desert. In the late afternoon a camel caravan takes you into the dunes for sunset and the night in the camp, with dinner, drums around the fire and a sky full of stars.
Day3
Merzouga – Todra – Dades
Sunrise, then Rissani, the Todra gorges and the Dades valley.
Wake up early to watch the sunrise from the top of a dune, then ride back to the village for breakfast and a shower. The road west passes Rissani, the old capital of the Tafilalet with its busy market, and the oases of Tinejdad. In the afternoon you walk in the Todra gorges and continue to the Dades valley, famous for its winding road and rock formations.
Day4
Dades – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech
The Rose Valley, Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas to Marrakech.
The road of the thousand kasbahs takes you through the Rose Valley, where Damask roses are grown, and the palm grove of Skoura with its earthen kasbahs. After Ouarzazate you visit the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, then cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass and descend to Marrakech, arriving in the evening.
