The Best Time to Visit the Sahara Desert

The Best Time to Visit the Sahara Desert

Spring and autumn are ideal, but every season has something to offer. Here is what to expect in the dunes month by month.

The Sahara is not always hot. In Merzouga and Zagora the climate changes a lot during the year, and the best moment for your trip depends on what you want: comfortable walks, clear starry nights or fewer travellers.

Spring: March to May

Spring is the favourite season of many travellers. Days are warm but pleasant, between 22 and 30 °C, and nights are mild enough to sit around the fire. The oases are green and the almond and rose valleys are in bloom on the way. Some days the wind can lift the sand, so a scarf is useful.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn is just as good. The summer heat has gone, the light is soft and golden, and the dates are harvested in the palm groves. October and November are perfect for long days in the desert and nights under a very clear sky.

Winter: December to February

Winter days are sunny and often around 18–20 °C, ideal for exploring. The nights, however, are cold, sometimes close to zero. Good camps provide thick blankets, and a warm jacket makes the evening by the fire very cosy. It is also a quiet season with beautiful sunsets.

Summer: June to August

Summer is very hot in the south, often above 40 °C in the afternoon. A desert trip is still possible if you plan it well: drive early, rest in the hottest hours, ride the camels at sunset and sleep in the camp, where the night is pleasant.

Our advice

If you can choose, travel between March and May or between September and November. If your dates are fixed, tell us, and we will adapt the timing of each day to the season.
