Day by day

Day1

Errachidia – Merzouga

The Ziz valley, Erfoud and Rissani. Night in a riad in Merzouga.

From Errachidia the road follows the Ziz river south, a green valley of palm trees and old fortified villages called ksour, with a viewpoint over the Source Bleue of Meski. After Erfoud and Rissani, the dunes of Erg Chebbi rise on the horizon and you arrive in Merzouga.

Day2

Merzouga

Desert tour and camel ride to the camp at sunset.

Merzouga is the gateway to Erg Chebbi, a sea of orange dunes up to 150 metres high. By 4x4 you visit a nomad family for tea, the village of Khamlia, where Gnawa musicians of sub-Saharan origin play their hypnotic music, the seasonal lake and the black stone desert. In the late afternoon a camel caravan takes you into the dunes for sunset and the night in the camp, with dinner, drums around the fire and a sky full of stars.

Day3

Merzouga – Todra – Dades

Sunrise, the Todra gorges and the Dades valley.

Wake up early to watch the sunrise from the top of a dune, then ride back to the village for breakfast and a shower. The road west passes Rissani, the old capital of the Tafilalet with its busy market, and the oases of Tinejdad. In the afternoon you walk in the Todra gorges and continue to the Dades valley, famous for its winding road and rock formations.

Day4

Dades – Goulmima – Errachidia

Return through the oases and the old ksour of Goulmima.

On the way back east you take the road through Tinghir and Tinejdad, an oasis region full of ancient ksour. In Goulmima you can walk through the old fortified village, one of the best preserved of the south-east, before arriving in Errachidia in the afternoon.
