A Night in a Sahara Desert Camp: What to Expect

Camels, lanterns, tagine and a sky full of stars. This is how an evening in the dunes really goes, from arrival to sunrise.

For most travellers, the night in the desert is the moment they remember most. Here is how it usually goes in our camps around Merzouga.

Late afternoon: the camel ride

You arrive at the edge of the dunes in the late afternoon. Your luggage stays in the vehicle; you take a small bag with what you need for the night. The cameleers help you get on the camel, and the caravan walks into the sand for about an hour, as the light turns gold and the shadows grow long.

Sunset on the dunes

Before reaching the camp, you can climb a dune to watch the sunset. It is a quiet, unforgettable moment — and the best time for photos.

Evening in the camp

The camp is a group of Berber tents around a central area with carpets and lanterns. Most camps today have tents with real beds, and many have private bathrooms. Dinner is usually a soup, a tagine and fruit, with mint tea of course. After dinner, the team plays drums and sings around the fire.

The night sky

Far from any city, the sky is incredibly clear. On moonless nights you can see the Milky Way with your own eyes. Take a moment away from the lights of the camp and just look up.

Sunrise

Wake up before dawn and climb a dune to see the sun rise over the Sahara. After breakfast, the camels take you back to the village, where you can shower before continuing your journey.
